| Submissions
Unsolicited submissions are welcome, although for most projects poets and writers are now normally approached directly by the editor. Potential contributors should familiarise themselves with the style of Essence Press publications and with the content of island before sending work. This is particularly the case with island, as each issue tends to have a specific theme. More The editor is happy to answer questions and discuss ideas or potential submissions by email. Please do not send attached files without prior discussion. If you send unsolicited work via email, this must be in the body of the email itself. Also, use a sensible subject for your email, such as 'island magazine' rather than 'hello', 'hi', 'reply requested' as we will delete and not read emails with vague subjects due to the volume of mail we receive. Submissions can be in a variety of forms: poetry, prose poems, concrete poetry, essays and non-fiction fragments. The editor has a preference for work that uses the landscape of the page creatively. Please do not send more than five pieces, and always include a stamped s.a.e. if wishing a reply by post. A brief biography would be helpful. Decisions on submissions can take up to 12 weeks, due to the thematic nature of the magazine and the editor's need to assess work alongside other submissions. Payment for accepted contributions is currently a copy of the relevant issue.
