Poems by Malcolm Ritchie
from the 'turning over a new leaf' issue of island

as I wake
the blade
of a single leaf
splits the sky
spilling
its raw light

a seed smells the rain
in a sleeping cloud

deep inside the glen
a cuckoo
and echoed in the silence
between its cuc and its koo
the din of all our insanity

in the imperceptible creak
of a beetle's knee-joint
spring marches out of the ground

rock softens its heart
to the delicate fossil
of a fallen leaf
